I hope it is Bandit but experience tells me otherwise. Docs explanation was sound.
When a bearing starts to fail, side forces cause noise first. This would probably not be heard by me at that stage. Dependent on the cause, it may stay like that for ages if it's, say the cage. If either of the races has cracked, changes like movement and more noise is more rapid.
When the noise is only just discernible, it can be confused with tyre problems.

It's interesting you say that Phil as the tyre/tracking was the fist suspect as initially the tracking was out. It's sorted now but the noise persists. I've checked for cables Vanny and it ain't them, the noise is more mechanical than that but yeah it's odd how it's started now after I farted about the engine/g'box. When I get the chance, I'll borrow the hub & carrier from the Valver and see what happens. I normally use GSF bearing as made by V-Tech - I'm beginning to wonder if it's them (and not my big hammer skills!) that's at fault.

Or even SKF if needed, and i wouldn't be fecked going to GSF to get ripped off, find a bearing factors and buy direct for the win.
Since the description of the problem keeps changing (now its 'more mechanical than that'), is there anything else you would like to tell us? Anything you changed in the process, exactly what its you used from the donor engine (eg engine mount)

Well, over time the rumble has started to happen on normal driving (i.e. not just when cornering hard) so as was pointed out by yous lot, it certainly must be the wheel bearing. Just to add insult to injury, whilst driving the Valver today, it too started with a mild rumble that has distinctly got worse throughout the journey to Longleat and back!
So, as Charlie has had similar short live bearings, the problem must lie in either (or probably a combination of) my 'bearing installation technique' and the crap that is V-Tech bearings.
So fuck it, I'm considering investing in this and some decent wheel bearings. I now have two to do and can also use it to press/remove bushes and g/box components (which I know I have to do to fix the valver g'box) what d'ya think?
Also, where can I get these SKF or Tanitatikheram bearings you speak of Doc/Vanny?

I reckon a press would be very useful - I have to take anything to a garage and pay 'em to do it, if you add up the cost of fuel and time it'd pay for itself in no time. I always thought they'd be more than that.
I remember when I was living with my parents and rigged up a sort of press with the workbench, a bottle jack, a long bar and the roof of my dad's garage. Amazingly it did the job, although now I am older (in my defence I was only about 17 at the time) and wiser(?) I can see that it may not have been the safest option...

Very easy to make one Bandit. I was on about it once before and said I had a drwg... well I havn't...I've looked. It should be easy enuff to sort though. Some small channel section and bar stock from the scrappy and some different sized short lengths of thick wall tube to use as bolsters.
Oh and I nearly forgot a good screw or hydraulic bottle jack.
If memory serves me, I also made the top beam adjustable for height by drilling holes in the sides and putting pins through like axle stands (I used tube for the sides)

If I'm up the farm I use the bottle jack / various bits of tube approach now.
If I'm in Brizzle I just take offending article to Bristol 2CV's and borrow their press.
If I'm getting SKF bearings I go either to SKF direct, since they have outlets in Brizzle and Stroud, or to Bowdens engineer's in Patchway, they'll get me either SKF or Timken same day usually.
TBH, you may as well shite / shat / shit in the hub as use V-Crap bearings...

I thought about making one Phil, after all a bottle jack from halfrauds was only £15, with 6" travel, but was a one tonner. I found some old T section on the disused railways lying about but it was a fucking heavy lump and needed carrying 1/2 a mile whilst controlling a rather excitable dog!
But for the one on ebay at that price and no hassle, it's a good catch. I thought they were more expensive too Matt, Sealey and Clarke ones are about £200.
With SKF Doc do you just order by size? I'll have a look at the web in a bit.

I've access to a 50 tonne hydraulic press and the last stubborn bearing i had ont he BX i struggled to get out even after welding a few beads in and part cutting the fucker. Sometimes brute force needs to be bigger
I try to always go SKF but i cen get them sub trade prices from Borders so its win win.
