No what you said was
well the data base grows very very slowly, maybe 10mb a year without any pruning, and that 70mb also includes a backup of PHPBB2, or it did, so now the database is down to 40mb again. Further, as there is a spare database now, the intention will be to have an archive for older posts, they should integrate seemlessly, but live in the other server, thus spreading the load. Distributed MySQL for the win!

In the Old English language that was spelled þæt.

It was also abbreviated as a letter þ, with the ascender crossed,

In Middle English the letter Ash, æ, was replaced with the letter a, so that that was spelled þat, or sometimes þet.

The ascender of the þ was reduced (making it similar to the Old English letter Wynn, ƿ), which necessitated writing a small t above the letter to abbreviate the word that.

In later Middle English and Early Modern English the þ evolved into a y shape, so that the word was spelled yat (although the spelling with a th replacing the þ was starting to become more popular) and the abbreviation for that was a y with a small t above it.

This abbreviation can still be seen in reprints of the 1611 edition of the King James Version of the Bible in places such as 2 Corinthians 13:7.

Seeing as that was produced without a wink or a ho hum, I take it you are a student of the ascent of English from Gaelic/Norse.

I was interested in the derevation of Y becoming a TH for a period. About the same time as the
Y in Spanish became an X and pronounced TH.

Y is a confused letter in nearly all the western european languages. It's mainly used as an I, but Germans call it Ipsilon?? in Holland they use it similarly to us ie, as i or Yer. Over in Sweden/Denmark/Norway, they confuse it with u (with dots) and it comes out as Yew.
[chin] Interesting........

Maybe υpsilon/Yplsilon because that's the name of the Greek character (Y in caps, υ in lower case ).

It irritates me when some graphic designer μαλακα inserts random characters in the word "Greek" just because they think it looks neat - saw it again on a DVD cover in the supermarket the other day.

GRΣΣK = GRSSK if pronounced by a Greek-speaker (who'd have to understand English letters as well as Greek ones ) , but it'd have to be written as NKPEEK for the right sounds.

So - My Big Fat GRSSK Wedding, anyone? (O μεγαλο μου γαμο Ελλινικο - and I missed out the fat bit and the stresses too).
