Don't be silly, you can't possibly avoid trouble where women are concerned.

Balls. Did a compression test today and two of the cylinders were below 100 psi :( Rest were all around 125 which is OK for a low compression Range Rover unit. Bugger all improvement with oil down the bores so thinking HG or valves...either way I'll make sure it runs but I think it can stay in for now. If it had been a ring problem I'd probably have junked it, but taking the heads off isn't too much work, and reduces the risk of me getting demoralised by a pile of bits and an empty wallet.

8) Yes there is something really satisfying about doing a head job. [drool] Either just regrinding by hand or fitting new valves, the resulting jump in performance and confidence in the motor is phenomenal.
Plus you can measure the bore clearances as you go. If you do find anything worrying it's easily corrected

This is the part where I say
" You know, biologically speaking there is no difference between the inside of a mans mouth and the inside of a womans mouth....."

Minor setback - I bought a remote oil filter kit secondhand from eBay, not realising that the pre-1976 engines have a different filter thread (13/16" rather than 3/4"). I could drill out the fitting I have, but that only leaves 1.7 mm of wall thickness at the root of the threads. Plus I'd have to buy a tap, as I have 11/16" and 7/8", but nothing inbetween. Might be easier to buy the bit I need new :(

I have taps but 1.7 mm is not enough. You will be able to get some fittings that will fit intetrnally as it is but with an iexernal the size you want [chin]

This is what I have at the moment:

Image

The lower part is obviously what screws onto the oil filter mount, and which needs to be larger. I can buy just this bit from Mocal, but it costs £34!!! (Almost what I paid for the whole kit!) On the phone to them I asked whether the sandwich plate was different, as I'd figured the centre bore would be larger to allow for more meat on the threaded part but apparently they are the same up to 22 mm threads.

As it happens the tapping drill for a 13/16" - 16 thread is 3/4" so this will drill it out to the root of the existing threads. It's the same pitch so wouldn't really matter if there where some remnants left anyway. I'm still a little worried that the 1.7 mm thickness won't be enough, but this would be the same whether I modified or bought a new part so may as well go the cheap route!

I'd already ordered a tap, didn't think of asking you Phil. Hopefully I can get away with just a second tap but if it doesn't thread far enough I'll just cut a bit off the engine. The other end, at the remote filter head actually is an advantage, as rather than a hard to find filter for a pre-1976 engine I can use one for all Land Rover RV8s and Tdi engines. Which I already buy in numbers anyway :)

OR, a plan C which I've only just thought about  Just replace the oil pump cover with one from a later engine, which I have in my spares stash! Sadly I only realised this [i[after[/i] tapping out the mushroom cover plate to 13/16"
