Stationary BX 4x4

Post by BrianK » 25 Feb 2009

I'd welcome any serious views on my BX 4x4, or should I say 0x4.(ie other than 'get a bike mate lol') . The knackered splined output shaft from the gearbox is revolving in the knackered female transfer box shaft. There are 2 routes I could go down:
1) Get a gearbox and transfer box that are known to be working from another BX 4x4 and fit them to my car. The problem with this is that (a) I will be disturbing the splines on the good ones which apparently is not a good idea and (b) how good exactly will they be anyway. They could be within 30 miles of a breakdown themselves. And it's a huge job. (One of the shafts is no longer available new anyway, even if I had 2x £500)
2) Wait for someone to come up with an engineering solution and store the car in the meantime.
PS the car is really good apart from this.
Thanks.

:D Welcome aboard Brian It's possible someone on here may know of one or where to look.

I will continue to try to source one myself in the meantime.
Another solution could be to re manufacture the worn parts with a more efficient spline design.

Another would be to find out the material specification and make re designed new ones.

This may sound extreme but I have access to a fairly comprehensive machining facility, It's just time I'm short of at the moment.

:) Tis the perennial question of what you do with a knackered transfer box (oh ye of little splines) which comes up from time to time.

Now if you'd read Brian's 1st post you would have known that

Thanks Phil. BX Bandit: I should have made it more clear that the male shaft should not be revolving in the female shaft - they should be locked together by the splines and revolving as one. Phew.

Yeah that!

Welcome to the dark side Brian.

If I ever get a 4x4, and I m planning on building one at some stage, then I'll make a new set of shafts regardless of whether they work or not when I get it.

Bandt, if i gt some free time then i'll post an explination with pictures. Its an engineering problem that i think you will find useful and you have the sort of mind that can add to the discussion. Basically there are two shafts that fit into each other, at the interface they are splined, and the splines are erm shite, but allow a certain amount of movement, so you can't simply bolt them down (without shagging the CV's)

 No it wasn't your explanation Brian! I know nothing of the 4x4 system, hence I'm not able to offer anything constructive, but I'll take the piss if that's ok! :P

I'll get murdered for this but was the Peugeot Mi16 4x4 a better car? (duck).Meanwhile I've been offered a 4x4 GTi like mine but with rotten fluid pipes and exhaust. It's got a good engine but it's the later solid state (no distributor) type. It's tempting to put the engine, gearbox and transfer box in mine. Is this a complicated mod? I'm told it is. Looms and everything. I am still looking for a transfer box for Philhod to look at. Kevin B has got a gearbox.

Erm, thats a bit cinjective really.
Personally I'd say the BX is a better car overall, but the 405 MI was a beast. Had much better build quality, sound deadening was better, handled better, but was a tad slower.

It's different strokes for different folks really.
As for swopping engine and gearbox in your car, that sounds like a bloody good plan TBH.
It's not that hard to swop the looms, especially as 90% of it is just unplug and move across.
Could be the answer to your problems, and distributorless is always better.

:D Wow! and not too far away from you either Brian.

Also the Pug swap is a relatively easy job as Doc says. I've converted a few petrols to Diesel without any issues. While your motor is out you can check all the hydraulics between it and the front crossmember, that are really awkward to get at with it in, cleaning all the area and replacing anything that looks dodgy. I usually clean up the lump, replace things like the water pump, cam belt, clutch, while it's out and with all the shit cleaned away and drive shafts/steering gear checked on the body. The refit takes not much time at all, giving you probably a couple of years trouble free motoring.........Honest!!
