More PC woes, well, it has been a while..

Post by docchevron132 » 23 Nov 2013

So, yesterday we had one of the usual voltage spikes to the mains, which seems to be a more common problem than it had been for sometime.
The net result of that was a fried set top box for the TV, no problem, I rarely watch it and I hvae spare units.
IT also cooked the base unt for the landline, again, no problem, have a spare.
I turned the PC on and nothing occured. Monitor worked ok, but no signal from the PC. The cooling fan on the PSU kicked in, the HDD spun up, the fan on the main chip kicked in and the HDD light came on, all the time.
But that was it. No lights on the keyboard, no boot, no bios, no nothing.
The netgear wifi router was dead, as was the voyager router.
Have spare voyagers, but no spare netgear unit, so I couldn't even use the laptop.
Anyway, get home from work tonight, took the lid off the PC, had a look, couldn't see anything fried looking, blew all the dust out of it, of which there was much, well, more fag ash than dust but..
Plugged it in and away it went. At this stage the tower was on it's side. As it s now, and it works if I keep it that way, if I sit the tower up as it should be, it all dies on it's fat arse.
Am I missing something obvious here? Or should I just back up the HDD whilst it's working and bin the mainboard?
In which case anyone know where Ican get slightly older boards? I'd like to get an identical board if I can, then I can at least just swap the fucker over without having to beg Vanny to set it all up again!
Are there any checks I can do (bear in mind I know fuck all about electronics) or should I just sack it off andget another?? Ta in advance!

If it works in one position & not the other Chris that sounds like a duff connection, either a dry joint or a push joint - go round everything and make sure its all firmly wedged in and then switch on again, see if it does the same. If it does its possibly a dry joint and thats a case of trial and error.

Offer of the spare tower for you or the missus still stands if I can get my data and extensive porn collection wiped off there

Unlikely to be a dry joint (doesn't happen with modern solder), but is likely to be a dodgy connection. The obvious thing to do is break and make every connection. Unplug every cable , both ends, and plug it back in. If there are no beeps, it's likely the processor, anything else would give a POST error.

Is it on win 7? They can survive changing mb without reinstalling stuff.

I wouldn't bother buying the same board again, that's a silly thing to do.

If it helps, i've got a 2ghz base unit RTR sat here getting in the way you're welcome to. It's in a brand new case with an odd colour DVD-RW & fresh Win7 if you just want to backup and start again.

It won't be blisteringly quick but it'll do Office and porntube etc...

Free to your very homely home. Let me know and i'll chuck it in the post.
