BX MOT Failure Rate - Honest John Classics

Post by Vanny » 07 May 2014

Interesting article over on Honest John about model specific failure rates between August 2012 and July 2013.

Of the 317 BX's tested 51.1% passed with the rest failing predominantly on suspension (28%) and electrical/lighting issues (23%). Most of the suspension related issues seem to be fluid derived so i assume these are hydraulic leaks and weeps.

[clap] Historically, anything above 50% is a good result.

Considering that elektrikery is the greatest issue, I would like to see the results for diesel only as ignition problems are the biggest factor in petroleum fired motors.

There classic car results, the kangoo won't bee in there.

Phil, I suspect most of the electrical faults will be bulbs rather than proper wiring issues. Remembering that other than an emissions test, the engine doesn't even have to be installed!

Strangely there's a larger sample for the BX of you look in the modern section. Better pass rate too.

Oh dear.

I guess the pass rate for the BX will improve with time as they become more of a classic and covering less annual miles, although on the other hand you may get more failures from stuff like the rear brakes seizing through lack of use.

I think the whole thing is a bit skewed by the type of owners.

Classic Ferrari owners probably keep there cars in better condition than a tight wad BX owner. And i guess some marques are more prized like the DS compared to the BX.

That's probably true Vanny (bulbs etc)
When I had mine I used to stick a 2x3 paving flag in the boot every year for about a month before the MOT. Never had a seizure kept em working fine.

After I had it about 3 years I did get a seizure but it was due to corrosion between the radius arm and the caliper, so having shelled out for new discs I thought I would keep them pristine 8)

hmm, both mine passed with no advises last year, this year, fuck knows. Dad's failed on a ball joint, which wasn't actually the ball joint at all as such, it was the hub carrier...
My MoT man wont fail my cars for a bulb out, he just tells me, and more often than not changes the bulb without charge, because he's good like that
