Front Struts...

Post by Bx Bandit » 11 Apr 2008

Right then, whenever I've had the front struts of my TD, there has always been a metallic 'thing' moving up and down within the strut when tipping it. The struts of the TZD don't do this. I also 'think' that the TZD ones close shorter than the original TD ones. I've heard of a spacer inside the struts....is that whats moving about when i tip the strut?

If so, what are they (the spacers) for, what's the implication, why are they on the TD but not on the TZD and I guess they should not be mixed and matched...?

Yes. All struts have spacers, it's just a length of bar really.
They are required because if you didn't have them then when the strut was lowered it would keep lowering untill the piston bottomed out, which would mean the tyre was eating the arch. Hence the spacer.
The TZD will have spacers, but there's probably a bit of a build up of stuff in the base of the strut that is holding the spacer from moving.
If there are no spacers, then you got issues!

Thanks Doc, I'm sure they are there then...I just couldn't hear 'em rattling about. I'll leave em alone then, no point stirring any crud in the bottom!! :P
