Actually, that's one area in which he has got a lot better - now he only barks if there really is something amiss, rather than if he just fancies eating your dinner! If he barked while we were trying to eat we just put him outside in the garden as a punishment (he hates being alone) and that seemed to cure him.

and what's he like with other dogs? He looks distinctly German...

He's a dobermann (which may be German?) but doesn't live up to the reputation of the breed. He likes to play with other dogs but has shown no signs of wanting to bite them - he will chase them though and run around for ages.
We have a guinea pig who escaped into the garden last weekend. We found him lying next to the dog after a thorough licking!
