AX
Mums AX (1.5d)is due an MOT this week, currently the hand brake is in-op on the driver side, results in totally inneficient operation. Not had the hubs off yet, they where new two years ago along with pads.
I think the auto adjuster might have fecked up. Tried to remove the drum the otherday, forgot it was part of the hub and that the hub nut needed removing, after beeting seven shades of shit out of the drum i remembered. Is the drum knackered or not? Is there anything i should be looking for once the hub is off with regards in op?
Also, camshaft oil seal needs doing (rather badly), belt off, new water pump, cam pulley off, change seal. Seems too easy, any pointers? Whats the score with using a spring balance to tension the belt? Will the usual half turn on the longest stretch do (cam to injector pulley)?
Possibly the wrong place to ask, but you just never know!
Doing it tomorrow, and citroen can't get the seal till thursday

Re: AX
Has the drum fractured?
They'll usually take a severe beating and survive, so it should be ok, working on the premise that you aint heavy enough to apply a force large enough to break it!
Has it got Bendix or Lucas brakes? Since the adjusters are different between the two!
Easiest way to tell, look at the back plate, what shape is the hole in it where the cylinder pokes through?
Suasage shape or round?
Either way, you should find the problem id it is the adjuster easily, they are very simple things.
Does the footbrake work??
As for the belt, I just do them up so it'll twist under firm thumb / finger pressure just a tiny bit less than 90 Deg.
Never had one fall off or break yet..

took Martins AX for its mot the other day , 200 yards enroute and the exhaust feel off by the back box , by the time I got it home it had fractured the front down pipe below the manifold as well, only done about 30 miles since last mot as well

Re: AX
Round holes for the cylinders (does that make it Lucas?).
Foot brake works ok, parents live on an un made road, usefull for the drive upto 20 mph, lock up all wheels, check for skid marks (ooh missus) in the dirt on the road. I've always assumed this is an acceptable method?

Works for me!
Erm, IIRC round holes = Lucas yes.
In which case just get an adjuster kit, they will be dead, they really utter shit.
Dont even bother trying to "bodge" them, they wont.

Re: AX
Yeah, you can buy the auto adjusters seperatley from the shoes.
Thats how shit they are, the shoes outlive the adjusters!
We replace loads down the garage.
the teeth are very fine and made of cheap grade crapite, hence they strip for fun.

Re: AX
I was going to say something facetious like try fitting shoes instead of pads but Doc's got it covered now.
Belt...for non auto tensioners I do a 90 degree twist as Doc says, but I always do two full turns of the engine on the crankshaft nut to equal the tension in the runs. Then twist again
(like we did last summer)
The Picasso has drums at the rear. I've got 50000 up now and never had them off yet.
Suppose I'd better have a look next service (Aug)
Brakes are excellent though....never had a problem.
Derek had the lift pump go, in the tank, last weekend....£ 185 the cheeky bastards.
It works if you give the tank a slap so now we have a knackered one I'll try and find out what the fuck causes it to stop working properly....see if there is a fix?????

Re: AX
oh yeah, well, obviousley turn the engine over by hand and check like....
50K miles is not alot on rear brakes on the picasso, Phil, unless you carry a fair amount in the back they do very little.
It's more common for the cylinders to leak before the linings wear out.
Sorry to hear that Mick, harsh.
Them leccy pumps fail rather alot, changed bloody loads of them, never actually bothered to take one to find out why though!
If you do find a cure, do share, that could make a few quid that!

Re: AX
Will do Doc. It works fine with a good slap...Perhaps it will work perfectly well if I do a faulty towers and give it a "damn good thrashing"

Re: AX
yeah, thats how we recover most of them these days, lay under the tank "do a Billy" fire it up and away it goes, they usually stop again a few miles down the road though, I assume it's the motor sticking up or something...

Re: AX
Dunno yet. I'm going to take it apart meticulously, if I can pinpoint the fault there should be a fix.
Just no time at present, they're working the balls off me in the run down to my finish at the end of the month, so it's drying out thoroughly in Derek's garage.

Re: AX
Nah, dont think so, it seems to be a mileage thing.
They last so long then stop, hit them and they work again for a while.
Never had one apart so not sure what sort of motor it has TBH, but I get the impression it's something to do with the rear bush wearing, we've taken them out before where they wont work at all in the usual position, but turn the fucker upside down and it'll spin away for fucking years....
Duno really.

Re: AX
AX went to MOT, AX failed! AX Failed on rear OS brake not opperating. Now i'm not sure if that was simply the handbrake or the foot brake as well. Either way i havent the time or inclination to do the job so the garage will have to do.

Probably just wants a wheel cylinder kit and a bleeding good bleed
Worth doing both sides though. Never done a sexo meself. Are they single leading or twin?

Re: AX
Single mate.
If it's just the footbrake then almost certainly the cylinders carcked it, quite common.
If it's the handbrake then it'll be a cable.
If it's both, then the adjuster has said goodnight.
Either eway of the six, not a bad result really..
I've got both of mine in for MoT next month, the red car's going to need a good deal more than a brake sorting I reckon!
