Yes but I had a 20 line explanation on there where's that gone then!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK Pic 1. The 2 pieces together. They will be fixed in this position for the work to be done.
The RH side is the outer shaft with large gear on the end, this engages with the annulus inside the transfer box
The LH shaft has a ring on the end. This is the carrier for the diff final drive gear. The hole in the middle of the shafts is where the offside fr drive shaft comes through to engage the diff.
The chalk mark is approx where the 4 slots will be m/cd, they will form a 4 sided slot in the outer shaft and a 3 sided slot in the inner one so they can slide together in the same way, once the 4 keys are welded in.
The weld will have to be turned back to size as you can see the shiny bit where the brg fits, beneath the chalkmark.
Pic 2 highlights the wear that's taken place.
Interestingly, on pic 3 you can see there it a bit of the spline that is not worn ( about 4mm from the end) which would point to alignment / engagement issues also. I will m/c the LH shaft slot back by a similar amount, when they separate, and be vigilant on reassembly.

In pic one there's an interesting wear ridge on every roller bearing!
I'm guessing it's been over loaded, or some swarf has picked up in the bearing shell?

 Right ! The first pic shows the 2 pieces slid together The second is the 2 apart one laying on top of the other, showing the offending splines both inner and outer. They are a little blurred but you can see how small they are in relation to what they have to do and the bit at the end where it wasn't quite fully engaged, shows just how much they were worn.

The big gear on one end fits inside an annulus. An annulus is a ring gear with the teeth cut on the inside.
Usually the sun wheel on an autobox is an annulus, but in this instance it's a means of transferring drive to the worm that drives the propshaft to the back wheels.
The end that it fits into is driven directly from the diff.
Rather than wear Doc they are actually ground finished spots where the brgs are driven on.

:( Yes it is pitiful Doc. When you think that the shafts, carriers, gears, are actually fabrications ie,
not m/cd from solid, they could easily have made the RH shaft (1st pic) thicker and increased the spline size.

If you look again at that pic, where thw diff carrier (LH side) meets the shaft, you can see the weld.

Even though the splines are worn, they still "engage", that's why I will have to m/c the 2 pieces together.

it does rather make one wonder just what monkey sat down and thought "that'll last a long long time that"...
I'm surprised most of them didn't fail within walking distance of the dealership really..

Do you really think anything is designed to last a long long time any more? I reckon it's all designed to fail just outside the warranty period...

'Engineered to a cost' to keep the bean counters happy to make a company more profit mostly to please the fucking greedy city based shareholders in the latest fad.

I fucking hate shareholders, look at Cadbury.

:( No thanks....., it's all chocklatty an I'm on a diet :(

Joking apart. Them's what pulled all their money out of production in the '80's and stuck it into banking, putting upwards of 5 million unemployed, whatever the official figure was rounded down to.
Then we have to bail the greedy bastards out, so they can still have their bonuses.
Supported by a bunch of thieving rogues in fucking parliament.
So remember when you vote Tory, you are voting for the party that has always supported these bastards and is mostly made up of them.

I won't be voting for the conserves mate, no fuckin' worries there. Cameron is out of his depth by a mile. Let's face it, there's no one to vote for is there?

Your dead right there mate and when we did stop shouting and took action they just put us out of work.

And if you read your history books and look around the world, you know that people that don't listen end up getting shot at
eventually.

and yes, indeed, gentlemen

whilst i do not, at all, support the arrogant, and the dishonest, and yes, the downright shameful actions of our present democratic representatives

it must be said

anyone, yes indeed, anyone who votes, and votes tory,

should firstly be slapped, and then stamped upon, and made to feel pain, yes indeed,

big hurty pain, cause thats wot the fuckin tories will do to us
