MY Little Girlie lives!

Post by docchevron132 » 04 Dec 2010

my favourite vehicle ever!

After sitting in the shed for 5 years, un started, untouched, after a bit of fiddling with the points and some warming of the carby it starts!
Ran like a bag of shit for a while, but isn't too bad now, even though the petrol in it is about 7 years old at least!
The brakes have leaked all the fluid out though, so time to bin the whole system and fit something that can actually stop it!

Got next to fuck all done again today, but I'm very happy to have her running again!

Its what Saturdays are for, not listening to a group of women bitching about how they have been used and abused and fucked off by men. Oh just me then?

erm, probably not.
The valvers nearly finished, whereas this thing is looking mighty unhappy now.
It's 40 years old next April, Ash framed and saggy.
So I'll lift the body and restore it properly. I've had it for 18 years and it's unique, so it's worth doing properly and enjoying!

Not just you Ted, although these days I do try and avoid wimmin!

took a bit of persuading to go, but as always it just did and settled down.
A little concerned that all the brake fluid has vanished and the pedal just goes to the floor with no resistance, really should have worked the pedal more often.
That said, the brakes were always shite on it, so time for a major redesign there I think!

It shouldn't be too difficult to replace said culprits with more modern stopping equipment.

Well, the master cylinder was impossible to get bits for years ago, had to have the piston made etc..
It seems it's leaking badly again, and seals are NLA.
I do have a pair of new, bigger servo's, although I've had them for 10 years at least, so they are probably knackered by now aswell really.

The rear brakes are tiny and the handbrake was always shit.
The front brakes aint much better really, so yeah, I reckon total redesign, discs up front (thinking Transit or similar since I reckon I could get the stub axles to fit the axle like?) and maybe Transit 3.5 rear brakes, or some such, haven't given it much thought yet, but yeah, it would be nice to have brakes on it!

Well that's what I meant Doc. Complete replacement with modern stuff. The Picasso's fronts are pretty good and the servo is not that big in size but packs a good punch.
Go for rear discs a la BX perhaps The possibilities are endless :)

Which stable is the ambulance from Leyland? rootes, ford, GM? Quite often hole pitches and the like stay around for years.
Is the clutch, cable or oily?

It's a Leyland mate, finest BL tin!

Clutch? God lord no, Borg Warner Model 8 3 speed auto!

Could go discs on the back, although I guess they'd need to be mighty epic for the handbrake really.. Dunno yet, Ideally something that has 5 stud hubs with the same offset would be ideal, then I can keep the original wheels at least.

Merc 709 / 811 had crossed my mind JD, but as mentioned earlier, 6 stud I'd prefer to avoid really.

I actually had considered Full Citroen powered brakes, and I think it would probably cope actually.

Well thats the route I was heading in I think Doc. In actual operation they are superior to most, in my experience. The only 5 stud Leyland stuff I can think of comes from the same era. Rover SD1's perhaps. Mine stopped pretty well AIR :)

Needs to be commercial 5 stud really Phil, I'm thinking the dinky early Cargo's that had air over hydraulic brakes, or maybe some later Leyland stuff...
Until I gte it int he air and start thinking about it I dunno really, but now the brakes have failed completely it seems a good time to do something about it, they were never very good when they did actually apply!

still not quite commercial enough I think..
Will look into it though, just to complicate it further it would be great if I could find a decent brake setup on stub axles that would fit ont he current I beam axle.
