Crack

in me windscreen on the bastard XM. Got a theory:

It's in the outer layer of glass and currently out of the 'swept area' by the wipers.
Would I be wise (!) to make a small hole (3mm diam) with a dremmel bit, nearly down to the sandwhich layer, to stop the crack from propagating? Then fill will a UV windscreen repair or even araldite? In a way, I've nowt to loose right?

drilling th very end of the crack will stop it spreading yes.
A while ago I opened up the crack with a die grinder and diamond disc and filled it with that "ston chip repair" shit from Halfrauds. Didn't look too bad, and AFAIK the car still has the same screen now.

What's the best 'bit' to use then? I have some diamond embedded grinding/engraving style bits - I think that'd be best non? Be pointless if I use a bit that spreads loads of cracks from where I drill like

As Doc says drill the end of the crack but have the center actually off the end of the crack.
I use 3mm diamond cutters from my model-making set.

If it's insured why not just get Autoglass out?????????

   Good idea Mat.
It's exactly the same procedure for welding cracks up in cast Iron.

Hammer setting!

Only thought of going through insurance Phil - not sure what my excess is, but I guess you mean a non insurance job via auto glass? Worth checking out but I was trying a diy job to save £££ for BBBEEEEEERRR

I know this will sound daft but I've done it with a lot of success.

To get your hole in the right place; Use a very sharp pin punch, mark reference points on the glass, stick a piece of masking tape over and transfer your marks for centre. Taking the punch VERY GENTLY tap quickly until you have marked the glass surface. Any suitable drill will pick that up and drill where you wanted rather than skating around till it decides where to start :P 8)

If I drill my crack will it stop spreading?

I don't know FT, but drilling your own crack sounds rather painful :o

Phil me old tater, I'm not sure I'll use your method there, not that I doubt you or your method, but knowing my luck it'll all go pear shaped. At least I stand half a chance with me dremel and a tiny bit

:P Don't forget FT, that once you have drilled it you have to get it filled

It does require a gentle touch Bandit, but the masking tape keeps it together. (allegedly)

What's wrong with faith? At my age I have to have faith each time I go to sleep, that I will wake up again. :P
