Scrapyards through Europe...

Does anyone know of / has been to any good scrappies (obviously BX related) throughout France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, W.Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium? Would be useful to have a list so I can see if any are near my route! Could also make a useful Sticky directory for future travellers...

I shall import here any offered on the "other" sites to make this the master list.

Drop details here, particularly useful would be long/lat if you have it (google maps/earth)

cimetière de voitures = "Cemetery of Cars" - Love that! :lol:

I think MTC has been to one or two, as did the Bxadonglywong team on their tours. not sure where but it's probably on Phils blog or website...

Aye, I can remember one near Colmar, and anther in Albertville. Can't remember how close your route is to them though. I've stumbled across plenty when I've been driving through, so you should be fine. Can try to give you directions if needs be.

Well, I think almost exclusively in metric, the only area where this isn't the case is now speed, and large distances.
I've been in litres, kilograms, and centimetres and centigrade for many years.
So, this will complete the set!

Well, the road signs are still going to be in MPH so you wont be using it in the same way that "home" users of kilometric speedo do. You may memorise a few point conversions but I don't expect you will be performing the instant mental arithmetic across the whole scale! :P :wink:

[chin] Just a thought, if you get a stop by Bill, will he be able to book you for contravention of any "construction & use" regulation? :?

:) Err, yes. Either you have to have a dual unit or mph if registered here. It doesn't apply to vehicles registered elsewhere, but there is a time limit.

Unless of course they have bent the rules lately, to fall in line with Europe. :roll:

My vans speedo only shows km, its been registered in the UK since 1988 and as far as I know its never been an issue.

As I understand it the Construction and Use regulations state you have to have a working speedometer which displays mph, which must be visible day and night (so stickers are acceptable if also visible at night). However, the MOT test doesn't check your speedo (although they are changing it from Jan 2012 so may be included then) so in reality nobody is going to know (or probably care) what speedo you have. So long as you don't speed, everyone's happy!

That's a bit like (in a smaller way) the mantra of the uninsured that they don't need insurance because they don't have accidents! (new requirements change this too)

Chances are if you are stopped for speeding (or anything) then an eagle-eyed copper is going to spot the speedo. I have also twice been stopped for spot checks where two coppers have gone round the car with a clipboard making notes trying to find something wrong on my cars that were not very old. I don't know if this practice still goes on today but if so this would show up on that.

To use an illegal speedo for the sake of it just doesn't seem worth the aggro and fines that it potentially attracts. :roll:

I haven't been on the receiving end of such treatment (yet) but good point. Personally it would bug the hell out of me and one of the first things after I bought my (imported) bike was to swap the speedo dial over for a mph version. Ironically at the time I was doing a bit of touring in Ireland; which it was ideal for as then they had road signs (mainly) in km, but speed limits in mph!

That is correct, which can include Smiffy retrofitting continental dials. There is no legal requirement for them to have "British MPH" dials providing they do acurrately display MPH (just as ours display KMH in smaller numbers). They must also be fully backlit.

The exception to the rule is BRAND NEW imports which must be changed before SVA.

Stickers on the dials themselves or any other tampering is also not allowed...
