The first time you ever do it to a large balljoint on a lorry is funny... cue hole in side of Portakabin, desk, PC tower, desk, filing cabinet...

Lesson learned there then...

[quote="mat_the_catI like the simplicity of the idea though, but personally would try and think of a different way of filling the tooth gap.[/quote]

The amount of damage to the original heat treatment is measureable, but doesnt actually make any difference in practice.
The welding action will only heat the surface of the parent metal above it's critical range and you could use a hard facing consumable if you were that fussy anyway.
The heat produced, loses temperature very quickly away from the arc and dissipates into the parent metal producing a slight tempering action, provided you don't go chucking water at it.
If you feel this is unacceptable, you could always make a filling piece and pin it in place.

OR, and this is only a suggestion,

put the 17 rims on, and they completely clear the gearbox casing anyways?

Failing that, i've got 20mm spacers to chuck up betwixt wheel and hub.

actually thinking about it, the 17s would only clear the box in the dead ahead position.

The 5 gear is reasonable, but crappy second to third like they seaming all are, but like the entire car its self, its a nice to have.

Thinking about linking fog lights to the steering angle too now ;)

Before we had wide LP tyres, we used to use spacers a lot.

However, I seem to remember there was a reason why you shouldnt go above 1/2" (12.7mm), although for the life of me I can't remember what it was
Find out what size spacer you need to clear it with the 17's on
I have a complete good pa rack, if you wanted to mod it first then just do a swap over.

I'm presently making a list of parts I have in stock. If no one wants them they will go with
K 39 when it's sold.
I have taken a bunch of pics, I'll try to post them in a bit. [chin]

I'd have thought the 17" rims would mke the total steering angle even less given how far into the arch the 6 speed protruds..
