So what do we think?

Post by Vanny » 11 Oct 2011

Is this new interface/ skin better?

Personally i'm finding it loads quicker and much smoother in more browsers. I'm quite happy with it, and most functionality is still here which is nice!

But what do you lot think?

Well, in all honesty i've noticed not much difference, but, that's probably because i never had any technical issues with the old one and well, erm, if you don't have any problems you tend not to erm, have a problem

Although i will say it does LOOK sleeker :D

Did you say you were losing IE support next year? Why am i the only person who has NO problems with IE? Maybe i just use it properly... lol xxx

I just wont go out of my way to fix IE problems, and there have been a few in the past. Basically, IE is a terrible browser, and its only idiots like me who support it come hell or high water, that are keeping it alive. So the sooner everyone stops supporting IE the sooner it will either improve, or die out.

There are some bloody big software changes coming soon, but i dont think they will impact the front end, just fend off some of the spam!

I think it's quicker as well as sleeker Vanny, it jumps instantly from page to page. Also it was refusing to post quite a lot, making me have to re submit, or even copy and paste my message into the next box. It's only done this once since the change :) However, that may be due to the other issues I'm presently experiencing because it did it on BXC as well.
Oh. and having to log on sometimes too :?

No problems here either! But then very few before, only when I was typing a reply, got distracted and then came back to it. This is the most stable and reliable forum out of the ones I use. Also, the post unread flags work properly whereas on most other forums they either all show as read after one visit, or sometimes still show as read even when you've looked at them!

I agree, they are only set to read once you have read them. BXC is infuriating that way because if my broadband router loses sync (as it does occasionally) while logged in, you lose all the bloody flags that you haven't got to yet!
I did take this up with Xac who says it's a shortcoming of phpBB2 and that they won't have this problem either when they migrate to phpBB3. Well done to Vanny for migrating early and not sticking with a problematic version. :D

not that BXC will be migrating to phpbb3 anytime soon I imagine..

I like the look of it here, it's smarter and more pro looking, the whole jumping straight to the "quick reply" box is pissing me off, but I do use IE mostly since it seems to work best with the majority of shit I use on internet..

Only ever use IE now for windows updates since that insists upon it. For everything else I use Firefox which I believe overtook IE in functionality and speed a few years back.
This open source stuff is pretty good, Open Office has more Bells & Whistles than the version of MS Office I use and they update it free on a regular basis unlike MS who want to charge obscene sums to get an update.

Interestingly (or otherwise!) BXC works perfectly in that respect with my work computer but I have the opposite problem with both my PCs at home - the unread flags will stay on even when I've read the posts. I have to navigate away from the site and then return to clear them, although sometimes refreshing the page does the trick.

Even that is more consistant than other forums I'm on, one will clear them all after a period of time spent online, others will mark some posts as read but not others. Plus if I visit one forum at work, read the unread posts, mark all topics as read, then come back to that forum from home they are all marked as unread again! Surely it's not that difficult to make something work!?

It jumps to last post OK for me so I take it this is not an issue in Firefox?

Let me try and make some sense of this.

If you click on a 'new posts' icon when entering the forum (that is an icon that looks like a piece of paper coloured orange) then it will jump down to the last unread post.

If you simply click the last page, or topic title, then it will take you to the top of that page.

In Doc's case, the page will have been jumping to the last unread post, but then because of the way IE interprets a specific 'on carret' command, it then jumps to the quick reply window, which i suspect is rather bloomin irritating.

Phil, your using Safari again aren't you? In which case, best of luck.
W2G, i dont suffer any problems in FireFox or Chrome.

Ah! It all becomes clear. It's obviously an operatror error at this end rather than software
