Specifically the &#8220;Off-Road Vehicle Operations (4&#215;4)&#8221; course. It&#8217;s a tricky course for the Freelander2 with some very deep ruts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The NW4x4r LANTRA Course<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, the best way to describe the course is with pictures, so here is a video attempting the course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NW4x4R - LANTRA Training 2021\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qz9syxXZbRw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Running out of clearance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Freelander clearance, at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biznews.com\/motoring\/2016\/04\/04\/suvs-whos-got-highest-ground-clearance\">200mm<\/a>, is a little bit low for this course which normally sees Land Rover Defenders passing over at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biznews.com\/motoring\/2016\/04\/04\/suvs-whos-got-highest-ground-clearance\">320mm<\/a>. While we manage to complete most of the course, eventually the back end of the Freelander becomes bottomed out. It was pretty much expected, so the recovery strap was attached before setting off. My number one tip for going off-road, always take a classic Land Rover with you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"411\" src=\"https:\/\/bxproject.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/20210221_NW4x4r_Lantra_004_800.jpg\" alt=\"Freelander needing some serious mud removal\" class=\"wp-image-1479\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bxproject.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/20210221_NW4x4r_Lantra_004_800.jpg 800w, https:\/\/bxproject.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/20210221_NW4x4r_Lantra_004_800-600x308.jpg 600w, https:\/\/bxproject.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/20210221_NW4x4r_Lantra_004_800-300x154.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bxproject.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/20210221_NW4x4r_Lantra_004_800-768x395.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption>Freelander needing some serious mud removal<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Then there is the small matter of cleaning out the tyres, brakes, brake discs, wishbones etc. But no damage is done, and the little Freelander almost made it round the full course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Difference In Tyres<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of the reason the Freelander made it round the NW4x4R course so far, despite slowly rolling the ground flat, is the tyres. I normally run on all-weather tyres. But knowing this course was coming up, and travelling fewer and fewer miles, I&#8217;ve recently swapped to General Grabber AT3s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/bxproject.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/FL2_Wheels_05_800.jpg\" alt=\"General Grabber AT3 on Freelander rims\" class=\"wp-image-1482\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bxproject.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/FL2_Wheels_05_800.jpg 800w, https:\/\/bxproject.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/FL2_Wheels_05_800-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/bxproject.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/FL2_Wheels_05_800-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bxproject.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/FL2_Wheels_05_800-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption>General Grabber AT3 on Freelander rims<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>They came highly recommended by other Freelander2 owners on FL2OG and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freel2.com\/forum\/\">FreeL2 <\/a>forum. And I have to say, I&#8217;m mightly impressed. They are definitely a little noisier, which is to be expected with the larger block size. And off-road the video shows just how well the tyres perform in the deep soft mud of the NW4x4R LANTRA course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Increasing the ground clearance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Having beached out for the second time off-road, I&#8217;m seriously considering getting the Freelanders belly off the ground. That said, do I really need to create more ground clearance. I&#8217;ve only bottomed out, expectedly, during training. I don&#8217;t really need to be that far off-road, and the rest of the handling capacity of the car is perfect for responding with NW4x4R.
