Interesting tyre quandry
So, the AA man has just stuck the Foci's space saver on the front OS (cos i'm THAT lazy). I parked on the kerb (as is the way in the city these days), get out the car, large hissing, look at the front wheel, no longer attached to rim. Rim is not marked, but there is a flap in the tyre wall about the size of a 5p and peeling back shows most of the inside of said tyre.
The tyre has had a slow leak for 6months + and i have been periodically (pre trip oop north) been topping it up.
So here is the question, how the hell has that happened.
To top it off, i was parking to go give blood, as it turns out, at the wrong baptist church, how many of them are there in my post code? Apparently 2, and the other was quite a way away.
Not so good days.
I do have new horns for the BX though! There even red (electric not pneumatic)

But its not 'nicked' its torn, with a flap. Normally you end up with a bit of a slit in the tyre wall not a full flap.
Anyways, the KwikFit man has been, all sorted and done, and he's about as confused as me.
My only theory is that as you say dock i've dragged the wall along the kerb and there has been something sticking out, either a step between sections of kerb, or something metalic. Who cares, i'z got new shoe!

Already had them, back when they were still a tad experimental mate. Clear now after 18 months of Ribavirin and interferon.

Re: Interesting tyre quandry
Just to bring this nearly back on topic, one of the tyres on my car has a date marking of 1996 on it! It still has loads of life left in it, but the tyre shop won't put it on my wheel rim which is the right colour... meanwhile, the spare is from 1991!!!

Re: Interesting tyre quandry
They CANNOT refuse to mount the tyre based on it's date coding alone, they can only "ADVISE" that (in their opinion) it should be replaced.
Of course, if it's damaged or perished then they can refuse on legal and ethical grounds.
There is no legal framework regarding tyre age (for fitters OR mot)...
Tell them to fuck off....
That is all. Thank you for listening.
Peace.

I replaced the spare tyre on my bus last year,as it looked a bit old. It was the crossply original from 1974

Re: Interesting tyre quandry
Ive just checked the pressures on the BX tyres, although they are fine tread and age wise i may replace them as the fronts are chinese cheng slimes with no wet grip at all and the rears are polish and similar in the wet. What fun. avons at 30 quid a pop i think.
OK, so i've got some stuff, some of it goes, some of it doesnt, some of it never will again!
