I'll have you know there were what were still called music halls, in most towns up to about 1955. (I was 11 then)
They had about 15-20 acts on, male singers, female singers, magicians, comics, some acts from circuses.
Wigan had it's very own Hippodrome Theater, it burnt down in 1960 after being empty for a number of years.
I don't suppose anyone will remember singer Ruby Murray? She was one of the last acts on at Wigan and will be remembered always as the cockney slang for a curry.

I remember the "Olde Tyme Music Hall" on the Telly and also the "Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club" which had some similarity, but not the real thing. They were good nostalgia shows for even those that didn't remember the live events.
Know the Ruby origin but Murray (Ann) was better known in my time for "Snowbird".

Well that was when it all changed really. in the '60's it started with social clubs and pubs which took over the role.
"Those were the days" used to come on BBC, they even had an introducer and all the audience dressed in Victorian costume.
On the other hand, programmes like " The Comedians" represented the new scene and thats nearly 50 years ago now
I was looking at some old photo's from the '50's, only the other night. Now that was disturbing, apart from some of the cars it looked more like the '30's
