waht vanster said.
Yes, that alarm is shite and needs to go int he bin, but you REALLY need to remove the whole thing from source, dont just go disconnecting shit, take the lot out from the loom and start again.

Re: Air conditioning...
Hmmm, if you ask nicely i have a spare complete alarm, paid £180 to have it installed into the BX and took it out just 3 years later because the installation was shit, and after many demands to the company that fitted it, i never did get the installation cert, they deny knowing anything about it, must have been a foreigner etc Even if it was a backhander, it wasn't exactly difficult to by pass given the way it had be thrown at the car.
A proper alarm system should at least be installed behind the dash, and the starter/fuel cut off should be as difficult to get at as humanly possible (dash out for mine!).

Re: Air conditioning...
just out of curiosity this evening before leaving work, i thought i'd have a look to see if the cooling fans come on when the air-con is switched on, and they do. So, I might fit the dryer this weekend.... what do i need to do then, ask at kwik fit for a vacuum test?

Re: Air conditioning...
DO NOT FIT THE DRIER UNTIL YOU'RE REGASSING!!!!!
The second you open it, the desicant starts to get very wet, and it isn't oiled. Do NOT fit the drier until the system is tested good. Also, a vacuum test is NOT the correct way to test for leaks and or system sealing. Pretty sure i said in this thread already you need to pressure test the system if it has no gas.
KwikFit are actually pretty well trained on regassing, and i would certainly trust my car to them for a simple regas. However if there is a fault, Kwikfit will fuck up the diagnostics, fill the fucker with leak detector (WHICH YOU SOULD NEVER DO!!), and charge you a sodding fortune for the priveledge.
You will need to vac it down at some point, but i wouldn't bother until you know there are leaks. You need OFN (Oxygen Free Nitrogen), at 50 bar, into the system. You can use any innert gas really, CO2, ArgoShield etc just make usre there are no additives in the gas.

Argoshield (all versions) and Cougar 5, have a range of other gasses in there including non Nitrogen free Oxygen.
That is all.

Re: Air conditioning...
Ok Vanny, I bow to your superior knowledge.
I wonder, do you have the equipment required to do any of this?
Would you be prepared to help me with this?

Re: Air conditioning...
Thats lovely phil, well done. Obviously i need to make the point a bit clearer, It's only recommended that you use innert gas so that it doesn't explode after being ignited by hot engine parts. You could use LPG in reality. The hoses are teflon lined so you wont damage the hoses, but if there are other nasty chemicals that leave residue then they will get mised into the lubrication oil and kill it, then the pump.Philhod wrote:Argoshield (all versions) and Cougar 5, have a range of other gasses in there including non Nitrogen free Oxygen

No. We have charge rigs at work, but we don't have torr guages or OFN so a slightly old fashioned method would be needed to find the fault.
Would you be prepared to help me with this?
Prepared, absolutley, able is a different thing. Its not like i can just take a charge trolley home (there huge) and we don't have components. It only really needs a vaccuum pump and some scales to do the job, but i have neither, and they aren't cheap!

Given the above, if you can come up with £2k then i can buy the kit to do the job!

Re: Air conditioning...
I only responded Vanny coz you said OFN, the welding gasses all have about 2% oxy, which is not OFN. I know absolutely FA about air connage. so thought it mattered.

Re: Air conditioning...
Since th drier on the car is broken though, how can the system be pressure tested without fitting the new one?

Re: Air conditioning...
broken how? Mechanically damaged? Thats impressive, there fucking thick bits of metal. The driers do become useless as they fill with moisture/grit but they don't usually result in a system leak.
If it is mechanically impaired, then i have a couple of old spares which are no good to use in a working system, but don't leak to my knowledge. I could post one down.

the glass in the top of it is smashed, I assume that is on the pressure side of the circuit?

Re: Air conditioning...
they're normally double glazed tbh, but yes it would be on the high/liquid side.
Sounds like you could do with the spare?

Re: Air conditioning...
I just bought a box of assorted neoprene O rings for £8 on the bay. will get the car pressure tested in the next week or so.
I've found new condensers elsewhere on the internet for about £175 but I've not yet bought one!
So, after I have the car pressure tested, I guess I need to come to coventry and have that nice bloke clean all the old oil out, and put some new oil in. What oil, and how much do I buy?
Is the following ebay number any use? 220862100791 I'd be more than happy to purchase it...
