Re: ****ING COMPUTERS
Right. New question; I've now got all my important stuff either on disc or pendrive and I have managed to get my pictures from recovery into err pictures on this new installation.
If I go into windows old and delete all that's on there. Will this clear all the old shit away without affecting the err new shit?
Secondly, as there is quite a lot there, will that stop this annoying message telling me that recovery is nearly full, appearing every 5 mimutes

Re: ****ING COMPUTERS
in a related but not that related way..
My Email account was hacked last week.
Since it shared the same password as nearly everything on the interwebs for me, I changed the password for Email, paypal, bank and all the usual shit.
All well and good, except I cant access my Emails anymore, at all. The only way I can view my Emails is to use outlook express, and I fucking hate outlook. Even then I seem to get about 1 in 100 mails.. I hate computers.

So do I !!! Although, I have done far more than I thought I would be able to do this time and most of it is sort of logical
I haven't that much interest really but, I am thinking about getting some training to learn fault finding and repair.

Re: ****ING COMPUTERS
I believe we have! Copy, Move, Save or delete your user files it's up to you and it won't affect the operation of your computer. You can uninstall old program files (Not OS) and download + install them again.Philhod wrote:All this said. You cannot have more than one operating system on a disk partition so if you start deleting SYSTEM files on C: you will fuck it up!
If you've saved files to the recovery partition (D: ?), you shouldn't have. BUT, if you have, you will have to be very sure of what you are deleting from this or you're likely lose the ability for future recovery from this method.
There is a book called "The Windows Advisor" from Agora Publications that gives good advice and helps you make safer decisions. See Linky:
https://www.agorabusinesspublications.c ... tions.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
After all Phil, you're the one in front of the computer so will have to make the informed choice. The book mentioned may help you understand more of what you want/need to do. It is the type of book that's good to have in front of you when you are trying to make sense of something.

Re: ****ING COMPUTERS
Well that's what I've done. As I said I have all the things I want either on disc or pen so all that can go but when I see programme files there that's what makes me unsure.
What I was told to do by the microsoft "experts" was to do a custom reinstall. This apparently wipes the OS and plants you a new one, but leaves all this stuff in recovery, so you retain it to sift through at leisure.
It's just they never said anything about programme files, but surely those will be available on my new version...or not
That was all really
I'll have a look at that, Ta mate

Re: ****ING COMPUTERS
OK Got everything more or less sorted now with this re install.
2 things. ONE I keep getting one of those bleep noises when you usually get a warning but none appears and all's well.
TWO. I keep getting a message saying an update is waiting to be installed. When I have a look at it it says. Important update, Vista Service Pack 1 ready to be installed.
What is this? Is it necessary or am I better leaving well alone.
Any ideas?

Re: ****ING COMPUTERS
If MS provide updates to your OS then it's usually necessary to install them, certainly service packs. If you don't then you will find other programs start to have hic-cups as many originating post-update will expect to see it.
Also it will be claimed (and may be so) that your computer is more vulnerable to attack if you don't update it as they include patches for known problems!

Re: ****ING COMPUTERS
After It said I needed service pack 2 as well. So I've done that. Now it keeps wanting loads of updates which take a million years to install. everything is running slow and sticking. The beeping it was doing is a signal that it has decided to switch my keyboard on and off randomly.

Re: ****ING COMPUTERS
I've actually had more problems caused by updates than the lack of them, including a wireless card updated driver which would intermittantly turn off wireless networking and require a restart. This baffled the manufacturers (it was under warranty) who on separate occasions replaced the wireless card, the aerial, and then reformatted the HD which still didn't fix it!

NEVER install windows update drivers for hardware, they're typically 18 months behind current.

Re: ****ING COMPUTERS
's more like when you stuck pack 2 in for me last year. If memory serves, it went into update overload then and took about two weeks to settle down.
If I switch updater off will it stop this random cutting out of the keyboard?
It looks as though I will be off to Qatar and Oman for a week, starting Saturday. If it's still pratting about, she'll give up using it after about ten seconds

Re: ****ING COMPUTERS
I will be flying off Sunday morning now soooooo.... Does anyone know how to stop this random 2 tone beeping and cutting out of the keyboard while I'm trying to write something.
Sometimes it does it as I start to write, then goes ok till I leave it a bit, then does it again when I re start.
Other times it does it every minute or so which is becoming fucking INFURIATING!!
Logically it seems there should be an easy fix, but I'm fucked if I can find it. switching updater off didn't help and that's stopped nagging me now anyway.
